Parental Advice
Alright, I made a promise I wouldn’t. But I guess I need some venting.
Mom and dad called. Shot the shit for a while. And then my mom picks up where my dad left off, in an earlier conversation. They both feel that I should go back to school, and get a degree in computer science. They know jack about computers, but they’re convinced that a degree will allow me a more stable position, making more money. They keep encouraging me that I need to study programming, when it’s not necessarily something I would go after.
Since I was younger, I’ve had this constant debate with them. They both believe that a good job, with good pay, will take care of everything else. Once you get a good job, you’ll be able to really enjoy life. I was always of the school that you should do what you want, pursue what you’re passionate about. If you follow your interests/passions, good pay will naturally follow because you’re going to be great at what you do. While others may do the same job, you’re going to be better because you have a vested personal interest.
Alright. That feels a bit better.
What probably made it worse though, was that they also though that my going back to school would help me "meet more people." In short, they were both telling me I needed to get out more, socially.
Which, I have to say, is infuriating to me.
Because it’s true.
