Working Late, Work Continues

Had a somewhat late night tonight (stuck around until about 8PM, working on a project for New York). Tomorrow will be a late night as well, but lessened by the progress I made this evening.

This morning, the workers told me that they expected to be done with everything this evening, and that today would be the last day. On arriving home, I found my front door unlocked, and the hot water going full blast in my kitchen. I waited around a bit, expecting them to return… but after 15-20 minutes, it became apparent that they were gone for the day.

My living room is covered in plastic, and tools are everywhere. The past few days, they’ve cleared everything out by the time I get home, returning the living room to how it was when they arrived. Tonight though, there’s tarp and plastic everywhere, so I guess it’s one more day yet.

I don’t mean to complain here, really. In my mind, the whole process was going to take a day or two; had I realized it would be more like 4-5 days, I think I would have been fine. I just didn’t realize it would take this long.

I guess this must be what it’s like, being an outside looking in to a field I know nothing about. What I should remember right now are the times I’ve had unreasonable deadlines given to me, by people who aren’t familiar with technology or the web. I’ve had people ask me “Oh, that shouldn’t take too long, right?” who have no real frame of reference to make that judgment call. I should avoid doing the same.

All in all, it’s a really great thing. The closet area looks pretty spectacular, and there are new vents all around the apartment. Given the expected rise in gas prices this winter, this upgrade will make a world of difference. And to top it all off? My landlord isn’t raising my rent for any of this, not even a penny.

How sweet is that?
