Dear Jane…..

Great question. The reason why the snowflakes were so big was because the temperature above the ground was very cold, nearly 10-15 degrees below zero at 10,000 feet where the flakes were forming.

Because the temps were relatively warm at the ground level, this caused a tremendous temperature difference similar to what we would have during a summer shower.

There was very little wind and the large flakes were able to fall to the ground without being broken apart by any swirling wind currents.

They sure were pretty…
