Got Chinese food for lunch today, and this was my fortune. Omen? Or just plain luck? In any event, it's nowhere near as cool as this one. // Edit: It's a day later, and the drawing happened last night. // Dang.... (read more)

Well this was pretty unexpected. I was in meetings this morning and... again, on walking out, I ran into Chris and he said congratulations to me. Again. For making it onto BoingBoing... again! The way I see it, I need to start going to more lengthy morning meetings. Because... (read more)

After work today, a few of us (me and Liz, Chris and Leslie, and TJ) met up with Ben (the real Ben, not the mirage) for dinner. The suggestion was for a neat Korean BBQ joint (San Soo Gab San) on Western and Berwyn. It's been a while since... (read more)

Ben is out on vacation this entire week... but came in to work to use the computer in his office. Since he was technically not in, and on his own time... he had the door closed, and a funny "do not disturb" note posted in the window. Perhaps he... (read more)

For most of the day, I was buried in meetings. When I finally got a chance to lift my head up, it was circa 3PM. I was coming out of Mike's office, and Chris walked up to me, stuck out his hand, and said "Congratulations." He then showed me his... (read more)
David Horvitz has a fantastic list of things he'll do for money. My favorite so far: If you give me $75 I will go see a psychic and ask them for advice on my life. I will tape-record the session and I will mail it to you. If you... (read more)

Last week, I downloaded a talk given by Merlin Mann (who runs 43folders.com) entitled "Living with Data." For anyone out there who is feeling overstressed, overworked, overwhelmed with the feeling that they're tasked with doing more than is possible in the time allotted... you need to listen to this talk.... Shopping around downtown today, I spotted this rather colorful exterior as we were driving down Jackson. Unable to jump out and get to the other side of the street... I opted to open up the car sunroof to snap a quick shot. The colors were pretty great, and this... (read more)

Both Bryan (Peabe) and The Grocer were part of a show on Friday at the Country Club Chicago gallery on Thomas and Damen. Both part of a show called "Hello My Name is Chicago," when Liz and I showed up circa 8:30PM... there was already a growing crowd outside... (read more)

Chris rented out a light kit for the week, to take some photos for an upcoming Scion project we've got. The project is a Flash game that has the user "searching" a few pre-defined areas, looking for a set of lost keys. The first area up is an intern's... (read more)

Last week, I took Friday off as part of my Valentine's Day weekend. On Thursday, the day before I was out, I decided to send out an email to let the rest of the design team know that I'd be out of the office. Also, we were slated to have... (read more)

by Kay Ryan This is not a problem for the neckless. Fish cannot recklessly swivel their heads to check on their fry; no one expects this. They are torpedoes of disinterest, compact capsules that rely on the odds for survival, unfollowed by the exact and modest number of goslings the... (read more)

HEL LOOKS is a site that showcases street fashion from Helsinki, Finland. I'm mentioning this site more for the photography than the fashion, truth be told. While there are tons of photos of various clothing styles here, it's the images themselves that drew me to (and kept me at)... (read more)

This is a pretty funny clip of Cookie Monster, being interviewed by Elizabeth Blair on NPR's In Character. There's also a pretty great article here as well. This was a MeFi link, but I also wanted to mention the original post, as there are a ton of links to... (read more)

The view from our window during the daylight was pretty spectacular. Our room overlooks the Lincoln Park Zoo, which is literally steps away from the hotel's front door. Also visible: the nearby Chicago Academy of Sciences and Notebaert Nature Museum. A zoom of the frozen lake. A little gift... (read more)

For Valentine's Day, Liz and I decided to skip away for the evening. We booked a room at the Belden-Stratford hotel, and decided to spend our evening here. There were a few loose ends at work, and by the time I arrived... she was already checked in. Interior of... (read more)

Will Wright, creator of such games as Sim City and The Sims, has been working on a game called Spore for... oh, years and years now. I first heard about the game back in 2005, and after seeing various videos of the how the game works... I've been anticipating... (read more)

This morning I got sucked into a fascinating story about Bluefields, Nicaragua. Due to its location (halfway between Columbia and the US), a lot of drug smugglers pass by. Oftentimes, when the smugglers are fleeing authorities... they end up throwing the drugs overboard, effectively getting rid of the evidence.... (read more)

A week or so ago, I got an email from someone named Sonja. Turns out, she works for rr chocolats, and came across my blog entry from Valentine's Day, 2007. She was looking for mentions of the company's chocolats, and wondered if she could post up our "story" on... (read more)

Bryan was out sick today, but needed a few files so he could finish things from home. Unbeknowst to me, Allison slowly filled Bryan's iMac with little To-Do Post-It notes over the course of the entire day... averaging at least one an hour. Ben took this fantastic photo (which... (read more)

I'm more a fan of the interface than this song, but check out Arcade Fire's "Black Mirror / rorriM kcalB." It's pretty amazing how much the song changes, depending on which tracks you mute/enable. Visually, it evokes a mixture of Guy Maddin and "Time Bandits" for me. Definitely have... (read more)

I spent the day putzing around with my Archive Templates, and tweaked the whole comment process a bit. I added a little dialog balloon style, and hopefully that makes them seem a step up from the boxy gray rectangles they were prior to today. Also, I applied Jesse Gardner's tutorial... (read more)
