4:45 PM - High Fives for Everyone!

A recent trend started up over the past week or two: daily high-fives. It began, innocently enough, as something contained within the Design Team... but it gradually grew, and spilled out beyond our rows over into the Affiliates.

Here's Brian's description of how it all started:

I believe it was around 4:30pm on one of those days where it seemed like everyone was kind of consumed with troubleshooting/testing/fixing things. Some sort of diversion seemed like a good idea, so I suggested that we seize the daily minute of 4:45, that we are all lucky enough to experience, by means of high-five's. Everyone within hearing distance (Laurence, Jose, Renata, Masha) was onboard.

Not wanting to take this appointment lightly, I set a calendar reminder for myself by setting up a recurring meeting. When 4:45 (aka "high-five") came, the rest of the design team was curious what our limited high-five celebration was all about, so we simply explained, "It's 4:45." Not wanting to leave anyone out, I then sent the meeting request to the entire design team. I felt sending an email to the entire company might be a bit much...

After a couple days of design-team-only-high-five's, I was already starting to feel like the rest of the company was missing out, but again, a company-wide-high-five meeting request still felt like more than I was ready to dive into; would people think it was inappropriate, laugh at me, beat me up after work...who could know?

FINALLY, Ben called me out on it by telling me he felt left out. Rey was also in on the conversation, and I expressed my company-wide-high-five concerns. "Is it too much?" I asked. "It's never too much." Rey replied. Moments later, the meeting request was sent to the entire company. The rest is history...

And here is an awesome video taken by Masha of the daily high-five:
