Got an IM from rypunked,
asking me to look over some freelance stuff she was working on. Before
long, a few hourshad passed by and we ended up going back and forth through
things for most of the late evening. The one thing about working with
someone else's code (and, really, anyone else's code)... is that
it takes a while to get into how they construct things.
For
my own stuff, I have particular naming conventions and habits I'll get
into. Throw my own quirks for ActionScript on top of the quirks I have
for how I set up my Flash files... and the process of comprehension gets
trickier. Perhaps you'll remember my gorilla analogy. :)
We were able to suss out most of the bugs. But there was one thing, towards
the end, that I couldn't figure out how to do. And it was killing me too
- since it seemed the easiest thing to fix. From talking to Grumpy
later on in the day, I heard that TS7
may have pitched in (and I'll bet he was able to figure things out in
like ten minutes!).
Gotta
love this internet community. :)
Poor
rypunked. I think she had been up for like 3 days straight, with a total
of six hours of sleep.
Portnoy:
I still haven't been able to reprouduce the error
rypunked:
try using both kinds of back/forward buttons
rypunked:
like just go back and forth a ton
Portnoy:
k
rypunked:
maybe yours works and mine doesn't
rypunked:
i only edited number4
Portnoy: uploading
rypunked:

Portnoy:
I went into all the questions, and into all the wrongAnswer / rightAnswer
movie clips
Portnoy:
I took out that extra code for every one.
rypunked:
k lets see if i can reproduce it
Portnoy:
I'll be curious to know if you... yeah, what you said. :)
rypunked:
so far first time, no
rypunked:
second time, no
rypunked:
third time, no
rypunked:
wow.
rypunked:
you might've just fixed that problem
Portnoy:
I wish I knew, more specifically, what was going on with this...
instead of just repeatedly testing, and seeing if errors pop up.
rypunked:
i know lol
Portnoy:
But, if it works...
Portnoy:
:)
rypunked:
exactly
Portnoy:
If all else fails, I have this little "Jobu" idol, next to the computer.
I just need some fried chicken and a shot of vodka as sacrifices...
Portnoy:
We're not out of options yet.

I got to bed around 6 and woke up, late, around 9. Called Justin and caught
him driving into work. When I told him I was going to be late and how
I was up for a long while, he told me to go ahead and just call in sick.
:)
I
guess it's ok. I mean, since I
started freelancing some while ago in August, I haven't really ever
"called in sick." The only times I've missed work are either
due to pulling all-nighters and taking the subsequent day off, or that
week I was teaching in Alabama. So calling in felt nice.
Next
thing I know, I wake up and it's around 1:00. Spent most of the day goofing
off.

Around 7 PM, I headed over to meet Phil (whose
alter ego at Q101 is Twitch) for his birthday bash. At Diversy
Bowl! Woot! I was a bit nervous, as I didn't really know all that
many people there. But the whole bowling thing was a blast, and I had
a great deal of fun. The best part was the lightshow, when all the lights
dimmed down, disco flashing crap started happening everywhere, and they
started to pump in fog from the ceilings. :D Ha!
The
whole time, I kept trying to figure out what made this sort of thing so
attractive. One idea was that this was as far as most of us would go,
just shy of admitting that we might be attracted to disco. It's not really
a disco in this case. You're merely bowling in what appears to
be a discotech.
The
other thing that seems attractive about bowling: it seems to be the one
place where "victory dances" are entirely appropriate. For everyone.
I mean, you can tank completely - roll a bowl right into the gutter, all
the way down. But then you are entirely able to turn around and do
any sort of silly dance you want. It works for strikes and spares,
it works for fuckups. It's brilliant.
And
most of us, one time or another have heard Van
Halens' "Hot for Teacher" (say it with me now... "I
don't feel tardy"). But in a bowling alley, it's perfectly
ok to have it playing at ear-bursting levels. And to have that song be
your particular soundtrack, as you're hucking a twelve-pound glowing ball
into the dark, trying to knock down ten flourescent pins... well, there
are worse ways to spend a Friday.
Then
again, it could have been the beer as well. :)
One
tremendously cool thing. I heard "Me and Julio," as done by
Me First and the
Gimme Gimmes. I ran up to the counter and asked if them to play their
version of "Rainbow Connection." And the girl running the records
gushed and said she loved that song too. What a fun place.
